About MACI

Welcome to MACI!

The Massachusetts Association for the Chemically Injured began as a local support group in 1994, and incorporated as a Massachusetts 501(c)3 non-profit, tax-exempt organization in 1996.

MACI is a diverse, all-volunteer, non-profit, statewide support, education, resource, and referral organization for people with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), those sensitive to chemicals in the environment, and all concerned about the prevention of chemical injuries.

The primary goals of MACI are:
  • To provide information and support to persons with multiple chemical sensitivity and others sensitive to chemicals.
  • To promote and provide public education and awareness regarding multiple chemical sensitivity and the needs of the chemically sensitive.
  • To promote and facilitate the establishment of self-help groups for persons with multiple chemical sensitivity.
  • To sponsor activities addressing issues of the chemically injured.
  • To encourage medical research on multiple chemical sensitivity.

MACI members are individuals who are chemically sensitive and/or are concerned about the prevention and treatment of chemical injuries. We work to provide friendship and support, and to exchange information through discussion groups, email, and telephone. To address the great burden that this illness often puts on families and friends, we welcome members’ significant others in our interactions.

Support group meetings are held at a site north of Boston, and may include guest speakers and activities. Meetings are smoke and fragrance free; attendees may also use respirators or oxygen.

MACI advocates for the needs of the chemically sensitive in Massachusetts and has testified before the state legislature and at the Department of Public Utilities. We provide resources and educational materials to various agencies and organizations, deliver presentations, and serve on related committees. MACI sponsors workshops, distributes informational materials at conferences, and actively collaborates with various organizations, including the Massachusetts Nurses Association. Our representatives serve as liaisons to the Massachusetts Asthma Action Partnership (MAAP) Healthy Schools Committee and maintain contact with the Disability Policy Consortium, environmental groups, and the National Center for Environmental Health Strategies (NCEHS).

MACI maintains a lending library of audio tapes (including recordings of many of our guest speakers), videos, and books, all available to our members for a small mailing fee. Members may elect to receive MACI’s email updates, notices, and other alerts. Meanwhile, MACI’s website supports our members and informs the public about relevant events and issues in Massachusetts and beyond.

Please support MACI by becoming a paid member. Your contribution will help MACI continue its efforts to provide support, education, and advocacy for the growing number of individuals with chemical sensitivity.
